CO2 lasers perform a variety of cutting and marking processes in the food industry due in part to the sanitary nature of the laser’s non-contact operation. A growing trend in recent years is to customize food products by marking a brand logo or image on the product.

Because laser cutting is a non-contact process, it is ideal for creating intricate patterns on a variety of materials. This application involved cutting a five inch-by-five inch wide design on cotton/polyester fabric. In addition to accurate, repeatable cuts, a CO2 laser cuts and seals edges cleanly so that fraying of the fabric is eliminated.

Automotive Plastics

With the growing need for part identification in the automotive, aerospace, electronics, and pharmaceutical industries, CO2 lasers have become an essential tool for plastics fabricators. The alphanumeric code on this plastic automotive part was created using a CO2 laser.

The type of plastic, absorption of the laser beam, and power used will determine the type of mark that can be created on the material. The two basic types of marking are achieved by either engraving the material or creating a contrasting mark on the surface. Engraved marks are created when the laser actually removes material, creating a depression. Contrasting marks are created by either surface melting or by surface discoloration via a chemical reaction of the material to the laser beam, usually requiring less power than engraving.

Carbon Fiber Cutting

Clean cuts were achieved on the 0.020" thick woven carbon fiber. The diagonal cut was made at a slightly slower speed, due to the variation of the material density.

The durability and light weight of carbon fiber has made it popular in the fabrication process of automotive, aircraft and sporting equipment. In the racing industry, where weight is a crucial factor, metal frames are increasingly being replaced by carbon fiber over urethane foam constructions.

Many industries, especially pharmaceutical and medical firms, are moving to clearly identify and track their products using familiar barcodes or 2D codes. Even plain text is now marked, or in some cases, molded into products and read using optical character verification (OCV) vision tools. These automated systems can be integrated throughout the product path from the manufacturing floor to pick and pack machinery in the manufacturers warehouse to the end-users shelf.

These plastic vial caps demonstrate the ability of our CO2 lasers to mark legible human-readable and machine-readable text on a variety of surfaces.

When performing sample testing on unfamiliar materials, it’s often useful to mark a matrix that displays Resolution versus Power (at a fixed Velocity) or displays Velocity versus Power (at a fixed Resolution). If the mark consists of filled objects, a matrix of filled squares demonstrates the best mark parameters for filling shapes or raster-scanning imported images.

For text objects, a matrix of unfilled squares will demonstrate optimum values for marking single stroke lines. After you have chosen appropriate Power and Resolution (or Velocity) values based on the matrix results, you can experiment with changing other object properties to fine-tune the mark to your particular requirements.
